I wrote a book series about the railways and here’s why you have to read it! My name is Andy and I’m an author and educator with a passion for the railways and storytelling.
I released the Not-So-Romantic Railways back in April 2022 and since then I have added three more books and two activities book to the collection.
You just have to read them!
But why? With busy lives, so much content to consume and food to eat why is my little book about the railways something you have to read?
Let me explain…
It’s accessible
If you search for railway books you will find they are either for small children or railway enthusiasts. There are so few books for everyone else out there but the Not-So-Romantic Railways is here to fill that void!
You don’t need to be a 4 year old having a bedtime story or a railway enthusiast with an engineering degree to read the Not-So-Romantic Railways. It’s accessible to everyone, no matter what your knowledge level is.
The Not-So-Romantic Railways series is perfect whether you’re looking for an introduction to the history of the railway world or looking for some new information to build on your existing knowledge.
I’ve made a real effort to reduce the technical language used inside and the technical language that’s there I’ve explained in terms for everyone to be able to understand. Even from a technical language angle, the Not-So-Romantic Railway series is accessible.
One of my key goals with this series is to provide an honest and unromantic look at the history and operation of railways, making it accessible and interesting for both railway enthusiasts and newcomers.

It’s educational
You should expect any non-fiction book series to be educational and the Not-So-Romantic Railways series is definitely that!
I’ve used my 10+ years of educational experience to blend a mixture of humour and education to make an entertaining educational railway journey.
Rather than big waves of technical text I’ve written the not-so-romantic railways series in an informal and relaxed way with facts that the other railway books just don’t tell you!
Digestible and accessible information for everyone.

It’s not-so-romantic
The clue is really in the title.
My books offer an honest look at the less glamorous side of the railways rather than focussing on only the locomotives and engineering side of the railway history.
I don’t focus on how many rivets a boiler has, I focus on the real world of the railways in a blend of engineering and social history. Most of the railway developments happened only when something terrible had happened and I share all of that.
Where most railway books are counting screws, I’m explaining why potatoes were an important part of the dining experience and what the railways were like for everyday people like me and you.

It’s for everyone
Whether you a budding railway fan at home or whether you’re one yourself, this series is truly for everyone. Even if you think you know everything about the railways, I can guarantee you’ll learn something new by reading the not-so-romantic railways series.

It’s affordable
Unlike books published through the mainstream publishing companies my books are all independently published by me, this means I have complete control of the price. I’ve reduced my potential profit margins to make the books as affordable as printing costs allow them to be, afterall what’s the point in writing a book if nobody can afford to read it?
If you’re a kindle unlimited subscriber on Amazon, you can read all the books in the series for completely free on your kindle!
Affordable is something I’m passionate about so won’t be upping the prices anytime soon.
